About Us

Bookshelves and display table inside The Gilded Acorn

Personal. Professional. Smart. These are the three words that define the ethos of The Gilded Acorn. It is our desire to provide an experience that not only matches our name’s history as a prestigious bookshop carrying a broad wealth of information, but allows us, as a bookshop and as people, to connect with the vibrant community surrounding us in the heart of London.

Our extensive and varied selection of literature is lovingly curated by each one of us, our collection crafted by our various interests, experiences and personalities. When you walk into our bookshop, and look through our shelves, we want you to see us. Downstairs, we have our beautiful reading area, furnished with soft armchairs and sofas to create a cosy bunker in which to hide away from the hustle and bustle of London life, as well as being the home to our veritable treasure trove of second hand literature. Both of these areas (our curated selection upstairs and the snug peacefulness of our reading area) represent our vision, and our dream; There are a myriad of bookshops that help you to read, but we want to be a bookshop that helps you to love reading.

We are passionate about this because we feel that, in an increasingly digital age, the role of the bookseller has been lost. Big chains, online retailers, these entities have given readers convenience but at the cost of that personal touch, which we consider the soul of a bookshop. We want to help you read in any way we can. Looking for a specific book? We can order it for you to arrive the next day. Unsure of what you want? The three of us are fanatical readers and experienced booksellers, so we’ll be more than happy to help recommend something; There is no more joyous moment for us then when a customer returns having thoroughly enjoyed something they might never have picked up otherwise, and for us it proves that we’re doing something right that this keeps happening. We love all of our regulars, from the people who come and read in their lunch breaks to the people that pop by on the two times a year that they’re in the city, just for the experience we offer. We love the people that walk in on a whim, who fall in love with something above and beyond what they expected. A bookshop is not just a shop. It is a community. And that, more than anything, is what The Gilded Acorn is all about.

Meet the Team

  • Glenn Smart

    Acting Manager

My name is Glenn Smart, Acting Manager.

I spent 40 years in education, in London and abroad, where I was immersed in organising cultural visits and studies at home and overseas, teaching art, design and ceramics, working as a senior manager, and teaching English to international students in Palermo.

I have been actively involved with charity work for Cancer Research for Children UK, schools in Soweto, and refugees and deprived children in Palermo. As an artist, I have exhibited in London, with work held in the United States and at home.

Since 2022, I have been closely involved with the LSE and The Gilded Acorn, helping to take it from a well-loved, slightly tired second-hand bookshop to a cutting-edge bookshop. It now hosts more than a hundred book launches a year and has become a place where students, professors, friends and the public can enjoy an elegant, tranquil space in which to reflect, read, discuss and celebrate the written word.

Apart from reading, my interests include politics, art, museums and galleries, cooking, fine dining and wine, and travel.
